Talkeetna Alaska Lodging Near Denali National Park.
The
town of Talkeetna is located approximately 120 miles north
of Anchorage, about 14 miles off the Parks Highway.
The
Talkeetna and Chulitna Rivers join the Susitna River at
Talkeetna, an Indian word meaning "river of plenty."
Originally
the site of a Tanaina Indian village, Talkeetna was established
as a mining town and trading post in 1896. A gold rush to
the Susitna River brought prospectors to the area, and by
1910, Talkeetna became a riverboat steamer station.
In 1915 Talkeetna Alaska, was chosen as the site for the Alaska Engineering Commission, who would build the Alaska Railroad. The ompletion of the railroad in 1919 dramatically decreased the population to where today it has about 500 residence. Several of its old log buildings are historical landmarks and Talkeetna was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1993.

Talkeetna Ranger Station of Denali National Park insists that
all hikers must stop and check-in with the Rangers before each
climb.
Talkeetna is the main staging area for climbers waiting to start
their Denali (Mt. McKinley) ascents, and the Talkeetna area is
probably the best location on the highway or rail system to view
the Mountain.
All climbers attempting Mt. McKinley or Mt. Foraker must register with Denali National Park & Preserve and pay a special use fee of $200.00 per climber plus park entrance fee ($10.00 per person or $20.00 per family).
In 1954, pilot Don Sheldon flew the first commercial flight from Talkeetna to Kahiltna Glacier. This has become the norm for most McKinley climbers beginning their mountaineering expeditions in Denali National Park & Preserve.
